Eddie Lacy Camp was a Success
It started as a casual conversation a couple of weeks ago that ended up turning into a real thing. "I was talking to Eddie during the alumni weekend and I jokingly talked about him ever doing a camp when he told me he had never done one before," said Mike Lovelace, Director of League Operations for Gridiron Football - Green Bay, a co-ed youth football league for ages 5-18. "We texted and chatted the next few days and next thing you know, a week later, here we are."
The camp, held at Ashwaubenon High School in the suburbs of Green Bay, was the first of it's kind for the league. In just a week's time, approximately 50 youngsters showed up to see the former Green Bay running back. Many may not have known who he was, but they became instant fans. One parent who commented on the league's facebook page said, "Eddie was personable and made each kid feel like a priority. You could tell Lacy was nervous at first, but it didn't take him or the kids long to warm up. By the end, Lovelace and Lacy invited every person in attendance onto the field for a group photo. I've never seen this done before. This was our fifth camp hosted by a NFL player, and this by far was the best one!"
Lacy and Lovelace were asked at the end of camp when they will be hosting the next one, but neither ruled out the opportunity to host another camp. "The format will likely remain similar for us, said Lovelace. Eddie was so laid back and easy to work with for the event, I wish others would take note. There was no pressure on anyone, everyone was nervous and wasn't sure what to expect. I didn't see one upset person on the field at any point, and that's what matters to us most. "
Lacy was interviewed by local CBS affiliate, WFRV-TV, and said "Man, I was so nervous, I had never done one of these before. I had no idea what to do, where to go, what to say. As you can tell, I don't really like talking in front of a camera or anything and wasn't sure how this would go, especially having thrown this together in a week. However, Mike (Lovelace) did one hell of a job putting this all together and made me feel at ease with everything. I liked how small this was and I wanted to make sure I could interact on everyone. I'd definitely consider working with Mike and his crew again."
All proceeds raised went back to the league for use towards field costs, materials, and marketing. The league also stated their spring schedule should be released in the next week or two and was awaiting the field availability schedules.
