Gridiron Green Bay will host 1st ever celebrity flag football fundraiser

For Immediate Release:

12/3/24 @ 6:30pm

In the shadows of historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay, a smaller scale event will be taking place. This will be a type of "unofficial close to NFL Draft weekend. We are not affiliated with the NFL or it's official events by any means, but it kind of feels like it," said Mike Lovelace, Director of League Operations for Gridiron Football - Green Bay. This will likely be the largest ever crowd in the history of Green Bay, so we decided, hey, why can't we have some fun and bring much needed eyes to the growing flag football craze that is taking over the nation. In fact, the Olympics have announced that Flag Football will be added as an official Olympic sport in the next summer Olympics in 2028, catching the eyes of NFL players even.

A few weekends back at Alumni Weekend I started picking the brains of some of the former players and enough seemed to have an interest in participating and connecting with the fans in a unique way. Not everyone will be playing, but there will be opportunities for fans to purchase photo-ops and autograph opportunities as part of the event. Proceeds will be split among the league, and the different athlete and celebrities various charities. The first player named to the game was Green Bay's all-time leading rusher, Ahman Green. Although Green currently moved to the Houston area, he is still an avid part of the Green Bay community.

"I just needed to get away from the cold a bit. So we moved down to Texas. However, I love Green Bay and the people here. We called this great community home for nearly 20 years," said Green. "When we talked about doing something like this, it was a no-brainer for me. I'm a competitor. Many people know I am a part of the e-sports world which is also very competitive. It's in my blood. Right now I am coaching the Gridiron Greats, but don't be surprised if you see me out there on Sunday."

The Gridiron Football - Green Bay league features young athletes from 5-17 years old and currently has players from throughout Wisconsin. "As long as they are able to make it to games, which will go back to Saturday Mornings in Spring, we are happy to have them. Players don't have to be matched with a team, we can certainly help with that as we have many new players or small groups. We are a co-ed league and have players and coaches of all skill levels. We consider ourselves to have a league for anyone but of course we may not be a fit for everyone. " Lovelace added.  The league also has a fall league, although that schedule has not yet been announced.

Tickets for the event go on sale Thursday, December 5th at 10am. In the meantime, Lovelace and Gridiron Football - Green Bay will add more talent to the first of its kind event here in Green Bay. As of right now, our initial plan was to have a team of former NFL guys going against some of the kids in our program, but now, we may have to do a smaller and modified tournament. The response has been well - received and something different. Flag football wasn't really a thing back when some of these players were still going, they actually had to play a real game for their Pro Bowls, and now that game has been reduced to a friendly game of flag football, too. Other players in the initial announcement included: Dorsey Levens, Devon House, Don Davey, Eddie Lacy, Esera Tuaolo, Michael Montgomery, Brandon Bostick, Derrick Martin, Darrell Thompson, Chris Francies, Ryan Grant, Alex Green, DuJuan Harris, Vince Workman, and more! Fans are encouraged to stay tuned to the website, www.greenbayflagfootball.com and to the official Instagram page for the Game under the handle: CelebFlagGameGB for up-to-the-date information.

Country Recording Artist, Frank Ray, who appeared at last year's inaugural XRoads 41 and boasts hits like "Country Looks Good on You" and "Somebody Else's Whiskey" will kickoff the game by singing the National Anthem and participate in the event as well.
