Eddie Lacy to Host the First Ever Youth Football Camp
A familiar second-round draft pick, who went from Alabama to Green Bay before finishing his career in Seattle, is making a return to the area. Eddie Lacy is hosting his first ever football camp and he's doing it right here at Ashwaubenon High School. What makes this event unique, is the timeframe.
The camp is next Saturday, September 28th, from 3-5pm. Yes, next Saturday. Why? That's easy if you ask Lacy. "I had the chance to talk with the new director of operations for a youth flag football league in the area. I really like what he has for a vision for the area and he has worked with and knows some other former players. This will be my first camp and I'm excited for it."The aforementioned youth organizer is Mike "M.D." Lovelace of the Gridiron Football - Green Bay, a youth flag football league that serves co-Ed players ages 5-18.
"I just took over the league three weeks ago. After communication had been idle, I figured something must be up. I saw some potential in my time with the league previously as a coach and parent, so, I contacted the league. I knew what I could offer and felt confident in my contacts and abilities. I shared my vision and goals and next thing you know, here we are. There are many challenges but just like anything else, it takes time. "
Lovelace continued, "My vision and goals for our league are simple, we want to install quality in coaching and leadership. With Eddie, he was a first round pick, clearly he knows the game. Talking to Eddie this past weekend was super easy, we hit it off immediately. Football seemed to be a minor part of all this things we chatted about. Over the last few days we texted about making his trip to Green Bay as impactful as possible; I brought up the idea of a pop-up camp jokingly and he ended up loving it. I appreciate him wanting to support local youth sports and giving back to the community. It means a lot he trusts me and my team for his first ever camp, and a pop-up one at that. There's a lot of pressure and very little time, but who knows, maybe that will become a thing. You find out who's committed for sure."
Lacy now lives in Arizona but is doing some events in the area and wanted to make the most of his trip back to the area. After all, this is the home of the team that gave him his first shot in the league."Last weekend was my first trip back to Green Bay since leaving the area. It's amazing to see the changes in the city and yet the love from the fans is the same as when I was here before. Getting the roar of the crowd when being announced with other former players was something I will always remember, it almost felt like I never left, said Lacy. That feeling made me want to be around the game again. I remember those who inspired me and if I can be that for someone, even in an era I didn't play in front of directly, I'm all for it."
